The USS Macon inside her hanger at Moffett, about 1934
A P-3 Orion from VP91. | |
Moffett Field NAS's tower on the last day Moffett was a Navy base. NASA has since taken over operation of the base, and the tower has been repainted to represent Moffett's new name: "Moffett Federal Airfield". The Air Force and Navy still have a small presence.
The remnants of the mothball fleet in Susiun Bay, near Benecia, California. It seems to get smaller and smaller each time I see it!
An US Air Force F-4 Phantom at the final Moffett airshow. The Air Force no longer flies F-4s. In the background, you can see Moffett's Hangar One, once used to store the giant airship Macon, which was eventually lost in a storm over Monterey Bay!
This is a RB-36 Intercontential Air Force Bomber. The bomber was in service in the 1950's, designed to carry America's Atomic Bombs. It is an unusual aircraft, with six huge pusher-props, and four outboard jet engines. This plane, at Castle Air Museum, is only one of four remaining in the world. Castle Air Museum has many fine examples of Air Force Planes, including an SR-71, B-52, B-47 (last to fly), B-50, B-29, B-25, B-24, and B-17. The museum is adjacent to the former Castle Air Force Base, in Atwater, Ca, near Fresno. The Air Force Closed Castle in 1995.
The USS Hornet (ex-CVS12) at the closed Alameda Naval Air Station. The Hornet was scheduled to be scrapped. She has a long and distingushed service record. The Aircraft Carrier Hornet Foundation is trying to restore and save her from the scrappers. I got to tour the ship in 1995. They were just opening her up. |
